• resource ratios
• storage & data network bandwidth
• System architecture/ vendor (x64?)
• additional features and capabilities (eg GPU)

Categories

1. General purpose - default - diverse workloads, equal resource ratio
2. compute optimized - media processing, HPC, scientific modelling, gaming, ML
3. Memory Optimized - processing large in-memory datasets, some database workloads
4. Accelerated computing - niche requirement (eg hardware GPD, FPGAs)
5. Storage Optimized - sequential and random IO, databases, warehousing, elastic-search, analytics workloads
